We are in need of some advice relating to a Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) entry. We have recently despatched our first order to our customer in UAE. Our terms are Free Carrier (FCA) — our UK premises. The transport company nominated by the customer, collects from our warehouse and arranges labelling and shipping. We agreed that we are going to:

  • apply for a licence from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)

  • arrange the customs entry (NES declaration)

  • then pass the Unique Consignment Reference (UCR) number to the shipping company for it to use.

We have now done all of the above. However, our customs agent has contacted us recently to advise that the UCR has not been used and our export declaration is still “open”. We have checked with the transport company and it seems that it has done its own customs entry and declared an incorrect commodity code and our export licence was not declared. Please could you advise how this situation can be solved?
