How can we help to prevent burns in our nursery?

Burns can be serious injuries at any age, but young children of nursery age are at greater risk because they are curious and like to explore. As a baby’s or toddler’s skin is much thinner than an adult’s, it is also much more at risk from serious burns. Many of the children who go to accident and emergency with a burn or a scald are referred on for further hospital treatment. Recovery may be long and painful and many are left with permanent scarring.

According to recent data from the The Children’s Burns Trust, the NHS treats more than 30 babies and toddlers with a hot drink burn every day and this is the main cause of scalds for children under the age of five. A hot drink can still scald a baby 15 minutes after it’s been made.
