Q

What kind of support to business will be offered by the new British Standard on the circular economy?

A

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has drawn up a draft British Standard (BS) — BS 8001 — on the circular economy. This was published for consultation in January this year but the consultation period is already over.

The new standard is relevant to any business which is interested in moving towards a more circular model, ie away from the traditional “take, make dispose” approach towards an economy where material resources circulate freely, retaining as much of their value as possible and none are lost to landfill (see articles The circular economy explained; The circular economy — towards a greener economic model; The circular economy: waste not, want not). It will give businesses guidance on how to implement the circular principles in order to create direct and indirect value as a result of process, product/service or business model innovation.
