How will the new Uplift to the Building Regulations affect the construction industry?
Q
How will the new Uplift to the Building Regulations affect the construction industry?
A
On 15 December 2021, the Government announced changes, described as an Uplift, to the Building Regulations which will help the UK move towards its target of net zero by 2050. The built environment is currently responsible for around 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, and the Committee on Climate Change has stated that achieving the UK’s net zero target will require the full decarbonisation of buildings by 2050.
Part L of the Building Regulations is being amended so that residential buildings will be required to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emissions and non-residential buildings — 27%, compared with current standards.
