What is the latest guidance on care home visits in England?
The latest guidance on care home visits in England can be found in the Department of Health and Social Care publication Guidance on Care Home Visiting. The updated guidance applies from 8 March and introduces a new “single named visitor” scheme which was promised by the prime minister as part of his “roadmap” out of the lockdown which started in January 2021. The new guidance replaces earlier advice. It should be regularly checked for further updates.
Throughout the pandemic care home visiting has been a difficult issue for both service providers and for residents and their families. At all stages it has involved a delicate balance between protecting residents physical health and safety while at the same time supporting their emotional wellbeing and human rights. Visits from family and loved ones are a vital element of care provision. However, enabling visits during a pandemic inevitably raises the risk of introducing infection unless strict safeguards are in place.
