Has the Labour Party published any details of its plans for the NHS and for primary care should it win the next election, especially on addressing the shortage of GPs?

Details of its proposed policies are expected to be confirmed nearer to the election in May 2015. However, Labour leader Ed Miliband used a speech at the party's 2014 autumn conference to make a number of policy statements on the NHS and on the shortage of GPs.

Mr Miliband acknowledged the pressures on GPs and primary care and pledged that, if Labour wins the next election, it will:

  • recruit 8000 new GPs

  • recruit 20,000 more nurses, 5000 more careworkers and 3000 more midwives.
