How is the Period Products Scheme removing barriers in education?
In 2019 the Government announced a scheme to ensure primary and secondary school pupils and further education students in England could access free period products, so no one is prevented from accessing education due to menstruating.
Since its inception, 61% of primary schools, 94% of secondary schools and 90% of post-16 organisations in England provide free period products. This not a universal offer and this scheme is not applied to everyone under the age of 19 nor learners on higher education qualifications or apprentices.
The Government is expected to announce plans soon regarding funding from academic year 2022/23.
