How many first aiders do we need in our practice, and do our nurses and doctors count?
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 impose duties on employers to provide facilities that enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work, including an adequate and appropriate number of “suitable persons” to deliver first aid.
Exactly what is required should be determined by a risk assessment. This should consider aspects such as the level of first-aid risks, the size of the workforce, the geography of the building, the remoteness of site from emergency medical services, etc.
