I have been asked to present to our board of directors a report recommending increased funding to make improvements in our occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. Could you outline what tactics I can use to make my case?

Reporting to and persuading the most senior managers in an organisation to increase investment in a particular function can be challenging, particularly when the return on investment is difficult to quantify, such as in OH&S. Tactics are needed to ensure that the recommendations gain the board’s attention, awareness, understanding and then their commitment.

When considering the pitch of the report, thought should be given to what is required to be achieved through the message delivery (defined objective) and what supporting information can be used to achieve the objective.
