Q

What is the early years census? What is it for, what data needs to be submitted and how do we, as a service provider, complete our submission?

A

The early years census is a statutory data collection exercise that takes place every January in England. Local authorities (LAs) have a legal duty to complete the census by collecting data at individual child level about early years providers who receive direct government funding for two, three or four-year-olds.

The census must be completed by law, unless there is a good reason not to do so.

LAs must collect the data from a range of providers, including:

  • all private, voluntary or independent (PVI) nurseries and providers of early years education
