The General Medical Council (GMC) has published its latest State of Medical Education and Practice in the UK report. What does the report say about workloads and stress in the medical profession and what are its recommendations?

A

The latest annual State of Medical Education and Practice in the UK report was published by the GMC in December 2018. The report focuses on the challenges facing the medical profession and looks at how doctors are coping in what the report describes as a “high-pressured” system. This includes looking at workplace stress and how this affects doctor’s health and wellbeing.

The report states that the medical profession is at a critical juncture. Demand for care is increasing in volume and complexity. Combined with severe shortages of staff in some areas of the UK and in some parts of health and care provision, the report points out that this creates huge pressures on the medical workforce.
