Q

How do I support new staff caring for people with dementia, and with behaviours which may challenge, in their homes?

A

It is natural for staff to feel anxious when supporting people with dementia in their homes for the first time. The first step is to make sure you recruit people with the right values and competence, who have an intrinsic motivation to care for people with dementia.

Dementia awareness training will be an essential part of their induction. Skills for Care research has found this training is effective when it:

  • is covered in “digestible chunks” that does not overload new staff

  • uses different techniques, from group sessions to on-the-job experience
