What is the Covid-19 Omicron variant and is it more dangerous than previous coronavirus variants?
On 26 November 2021, the World Health Organization identified a new variant of the coronavirus in South Africa. The variant was designated as B.1.1.529 and named Omicron. It was identified as being of particular concern because it appears to be able to spread more rapidly than previous variants.
Since its discovery Omicron has caused huge numbers of infections worldwide, prompting many countries to reinstate their Covid restrictions and limit international travel.
