I have been asked to prepare a brief for our Managing Director on how we can improve arrangements for consulting with employees on health and safety. Could you outline the factors I should be considering?

Effective consultation with employees enables two-way communication and participation in decision-making relating to health and safety at work. Consultation requires not only the provision of information, but also that the employer:

  • discusses health and safety in good time

  • actively invites feedback from employees

  • listens to the views of employees

  • takes these views into account before any decision is taken.
