I have been concerned about recent press reports that some carbon offsetting schemes are not being properly monitored and are unlikely to be achieving the claimed carbon dioxide reductions. How can I find a reputable offsetting scheme?

The money you pay for carbon offsets is spent on schemes to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions elsewhere, generally in developing countries.

These schemes are quite diverse and can involve:

  • tree planting or forest conservation, to create carbon sinks

  • new renewable energy generation capacity, eg wind farms and solar panels

  • providing energy-efficient equipment, such as cooking stoves, to poor communities.
