Q

What is the background of the latest call for action over childhood obesity, and what action is being called for?

A

The call for action is contained in an open letter to the Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Dame Sally Davies, from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and 11 partner organisations recommending that a national Child Obesity Action Group (COAG) be set up as a matter of urgency.

The letter warns that, unless urgent action is taken, an entire generation will be harmed by a diet of junk food and sugary drinks — and the NHS will be overwhelmed as a result.

Supporting the need for joint working across agencies and professional boundaries, the RCGP recommends that the proposed COAG would involve collaboration between doctors, nurses, midwives, dieticians, dentists and schools. It would aim to balance existing preventative approaches with better obesity treatment services for children.
