Which of the waste exemptions are up for review, and when will the changes come into force?
The Government is conducting a drive to reduce crime in the waste industry, and as part of this it is tightening up the exemptions from environmental permitting. These exemptions have been abused by waste criminals who have used them as a cover for illegal waste activities - for example, by storing far more waste than an exemption allows. The Environment Agency identified the ten exemptions which are most likely to mask waste crime.
Exemptions to be withdrawn
Three of these exemptions are being withdrawn altogether. These are:
T8: mechanically treating end-of-life tyres
T9: recovering scrap metal
