Why does nursing need to change?

With more patient care being provided in the community, advances in technology and an ever-changing population with increasingly complex health needs means nursing needs to evolve. Education and training for nurses and midwives looks set to undergo fundamental changes and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is currently consulting on a proposed programme of educational standards reviewing what nurses and midwives will need to achieve before they can work as a registered nurse. The NHS bursary system for nurses, midwives and allied health students ceases on 1 August 2017 and with the development of new nursing role there are many other drivers for change.
