Q

Is the risk of infection from Covid-19 still significant in deceased service users?

A
  • Yes. The duration SARS-CoV-2 virus (the coronavirus causing Covid-19) remains infectious in body fluids and tissues in the deceased body remains unknown.

  • Although risk of infectious transmission is lower in deceased than living service users, infection control precautions (SICPs) and transmission-based precautions (TBPs) must be followed with additional precautions for aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs).

  • Where alternative causes of death are distinctly established with clinical characteristics consistent with known cause, care of the deceased should follow usual management practices.
