Q

What is the Government being urged to do with regards to Body Mass Index (BMI) and its impact on body image?

A

A report by the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee, Changing the Perfect Picture: An Inquiry Into Body Image, highlighted the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, both on eating disorder sufferers and those at a high risk of developing one, stating outcomes of the pandemic have been “devastating”.

The report stresses use of Body Mass Index (BMI) as a health risk indicator encourages weight stigma, contributes to eating disorders, and disrupts people’s body image, mental health and wellbeing, and has called for BMI to be abandoned. It suggests once individuals are identified as obese or underweight using BMI and entered onto weight loss or weight gain programmes prompted by their BMI score, this may contribute to issues such as poor mental health and eating disorders.
