Employers must surely have absorbed the lessons of the London Olympics and be well equipped to deal with any major sporting event likely to impact on staff attendance, leave patterns and productivity.

Unfortunately, according to a recent survey by business information experts Croner on the Brazil World Cup, that does not seem to be the case. Despite a good number of (mainly) young (mainly) men threatening to throw sickies if work gets in the way of a key game, employers seem unsure how to react.
