Coronavirus news has dominated the headlines for the last few months, but Government plans are still underway to carry out Brexit at the end of the year. Some employers are still waiting to see what the impact of this will be. On 23 June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU). Originally scheduled for 29 March 2019, the date the UK was to officially leave the EU was delayed to 31 January 2020, and on this date, the UK left the EU.

The tax office (HMRC) is aware that many individuals and businesses are facing difficulties in paying tax debts that are due, particularly during the Covid-19 crisis and associated lockdowns. Whilst there have always been facilities for taxpayers to manage their tax debts, HMRC traditionally have not given much leeway with late payments of tax. Their attitude has, however, softened during this crisis to provide support to business in these difficult times.
