The Government publishes annual road accident statistics around nine months in arrears of each year and for 2021 the figures were released on 29 September 2022.
Public perception tends to focus on, and often overstates the importance of, certain factors (eg excess speed) when looking at the impact of road accidents. Attention is therefore most frequently paid to issues that have a more minor role when the detailed figures are analysed. The opportunity to have an effective impact on accident reduction may thus be impeded because action is focused on marginal areas where gains are small and difficult to achieve.
