Concerted global action could cut the toll of work-related injury and ill health over the next three decades, says Mike Robinson.

Imagine it is 2050. What would health, safety and wellbeing look like 30 years into the future based on today’s ambition? In the last edition of Safety Management, our chairman, Lawrence Waterman talked about seizing the opportunity now that the pandemic is starting to subside. Here’s my vision.

In 2050, the UK will have achieved zero fatalities at work, an achievement that is the envy of the world. There will also have been significant improvements in reducing both the number and risk of fatalities in other countries, notably India where work-related deaths would have fallen from 48,000 a year currently to around 5,000 with a trajectory to reach zero by 2060. At an organisational level, across much of the globe, zero lost time incidents are consistently being recorded year-on-year. Wellbeing drives business performance which, in turn, is delivering higher levels of worker productivity and happiness. There are fewer absences related to stress and illness, and presenteeism and absenteeism are consigned to the past. Staff turnover is at an all-time low.
