Advice on providing changing rooms, provided by the British Safety Council’s Information Service.

Are we required to provide changing rooms for our workers and accommodation for employees’ clothing?

If employees are required to change into and wear special clothing for their work – such as overalls, uniforms and thermal clothing – the employer is required under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 to provide “suitable and sufficient facilities” (i.e. changing rooms) for them to do so.

The requirement to provide changing facilities or a changing room specifically applies if the employees have to remove more than their outer clothing to change into their work clothing and if workers “cannot, for reasons of health or propriety, be expected to change in another room”.
