A recent query on ensuring the safety of car parks answered by the British Safety Council’s member Information Service.

I want to develop a safety inspection regime for a staff car park. What sort of areas should this cover?

Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive states that, whenever possible, parking areas should be provided for all vehicles using a workplace – including private cars, delivery vehicles and bicycles – to help protect pedestrians. These areas should form part of wider measures for managing vehicle and pedestrian safety on site, where necessary.

Indeed, by law, employers must ensure vehicle and pedestrian routes are safe, and should – so far as is reasonably practicable – provide separate routes or pavements to keep pedestrians away from vehicles. Ways of achieving this include providing raised footpaths, protective barriers to separate pedestrians from vehicles and ground markings and signs to indicate correct routes and parking areas.
