Plans to erase the records of 2.5 million dissolved companies from Companies House have been abandoned, according to a statement which has been cautiously welcomed by asbestos victim support groups.
The Government listings agency had been considering reducing the time it retains records of dissolved companies, from 20 years to six.
Asbestos Victims Support Groups’ Forum UK says that this would have led to thousands of mesothelioma sufferers being denied justice.
They point out that access to Companies House records on dissolved companies is crucial for victims trying to secure justice. It enables victims to identify the correct trading name of their former employer and the insurance company liable to pay compensation.
