As the start of the new term approaches, make sure you are on top of your admissions process. Here are five things you need to do before a child starts at your early years setting.
1. Provide the required information to parents
There is certain information that you are required to share with parents under the safeguarding and welfare requirements in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). You can find a list in the Admissions Procedures topic here.
2. Obtain information about the child
The EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements also state there is certain information that you must obtain from parents about the child before the child starts at the provision. Find a list of the required information here. A useful way to collect this information is through asking parents to fill out a form. See a template Child Information Form here, which you can download and distribute to prospective parents.
3. Communicate the 30-hour funding procedure
If you are offering the 30-hour entitlement, make sure you are on top of the process and that you communicate this to parents, including what they need to do.
4. Have a flexible settling-in process
Ensure that you have a flexible approach to settling in that meets the needs of parents and children, as well as the provision. You should have a settling-in policy which all staff are familiar with. Find a model Settling-in Policy here.
5. Allocate a key person
It is important that a key person is allocated at the beginning of the admissions process. This gives the parents a named contact to discuss any concerns they may have prior to their child starting and someone to share their individual needs with and wishes for their child’s care. It also provides the child with someone who they can start to form an attachment to, thus aiding their settling.
