Crane death results in £80,000 fine for company director

A construction company and its managing director have been fined after a father-of-two was crushed to death when a crane overturned. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the crane toppled while lifting a steel column, which was positioned nearly 18 metres away and well outside its safe operating distance. The falling column struck and killed 46-year-old Mark Thornton, who was working nearby. The HSE investigation found the crane had not been properly maintained and the override switch that prevented it lifting loads beyond its capacity was faulty.
