The reform of public sector pensions remains a key objective for the Government and employers, as they seek to find a solution which is acceptable to all parties, balancing the considerations of scheme benefits, costs and long-term sustainability. The negotiations on this issue have been taking place at a time of wider pension reform, with many private sector employers making changes to their schemes, the introduction of auto-enrolment commencing in October this year, as well as longer-term changes to the State Pension Age and benefits. In the meantime, concerns remain at the level of awareness and understanding by individuals of the importance of pension saving and financial planning for retirement, with many having made little or no provision beyond that available through the state system.
