HGV Road User Levy only a month away

27 February 2014

The HGV Road User Levy will come into operation on 1 April 2014. It is a time-based charge that must be paid by both UK and foreign operators of vehicles in excess of 12 tonnes gvw.

UK operators will pay the levy alongside Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) on licence renewal or first registration after 1 April. VED rates are being reduced so that at least 90% of operators will pay no more than at present.

Foreign operators will have to pay the levy before using UK roads, either online or in person. There is the option to pay on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis with daily, weekly and monthly payments attracting a premium compared to the annual cost.

VOSA/DVSA will include enforcement of the levy as part of their normal roadside stops and, funded with additional support from DfT, will conduct targeted stops using automatic number plate recognition.

Details of the scheme can be found on the www.gov.uk website.
