The British Standards Institution (BSI), in its role as the UK National Standards Body, has published international guidance on psychological health and safety and managing psychosocial risks at work.
The first international standard in its field, ISO 45003:2021 Occupational Health and Safety Management. Psychological Health and Safety at Work. Guidelines for Managing Psychosocial Risks, provides recommendations to organisations on how to prevent work-related psychological ill health in their workers.
The guide, which is applicable to organisations of all sizes and in all sectors, highlights that psychosocial hazards are increasingly recognised as major challenges to health, safety and wellbeing at work.
Scott Steedman, Director-General, Standards at BSI, said: “The global pandemic has put new pressures on people whose employers expect them to work from home or in challenging new working conditions. This important business standard is a consensus of good practice for organisations everywhere, providing off-the-shelf advice for companies so that they can enhance the wellbeing of their employees whilst striving to meet business needs, a win–win outcome.”
The standard gives guidelines for managing psychosocial risk within an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system based on BS ISO 45001:2018.
It helps organisations to identify where psychosocial risks arise and how they can be mitigated or eliminated, and can help them to develop expertise, increase people’s trust and manage risk better.
