Employers are being urged to fight back against recruitment fraud by joining the SAFERjobs scheme.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) wants to raise awareness of fake background screening checks – a problem which it warns is on the rise. Fraudsters are using fake online job offers to target those seeking work, the Chairman of SAFERjobs, Keith Rosser, explained.

Applicants will be signposted to websites that claim to offer fast, online DBS checks. The catch is that they must immediately pay a fee for using the (fraudulent) service.

The scam can be very distressing to those involved, DBS Director of Safeguarding, Sue Smith, said, and the Service is doing all it can to try and stop people falling victim to these scams.

Most employers who need to request DBS checks will have to register with a DBS Registered Body – a company approved by the DBS to process applications prior to them being sent for vetting by the Disclosure and Barring Service itself.

Mr Rosser would like all Registered Bodies to sign up to the SAFERjobs fraud prevention scheme.

The scheme is free to join, he explained, and members can display its logo on their websites and application forms to help raise awareness among job seekers. In return, details of participating businesses will be included on the SAFERjobs website, which is visited by some 40,000 job seekers and employers each month.

“By working together, we can take a strong stance against fraud and help reduce the incidence of this distressing crime of fake background checks,” he added.
