Republic on the south part of the Balkan peninsula, bounded on the north by Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia, on the west and south by the Mediterranean and on the east by the Aegean Sea and Turkey. One of the OECD countries. Member of the EU and the EEA.
The official language is Greek (Ellenika). Understanding a little about the Greek alphabet (both upper and lower case) and the equivalent Roman characters will help with identifying street names and road signs. The more important signs on main roads and in tourist areas are often shown in both Greek and Latin scripts, but elsewhere will generally just be in Greek.
