The National Minimum Standards for Care Homes for Older People were issued by the Welsh Assembly Government under s.23 of the Care Standards Act 2000, and have applied from 22 April 2002. This revised version was published in March 2004.

These standards are used by the Assembly’s Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) when determining whether care homes are providing adequate care and meeting the needs of their service users in accordance with regulatory requirements. They are core requirements, applicable to all establishments providing accommodation together with personal or nursing care for older people that are not excepted by the Care Standards Act or the regulations.

This revised version of the standards incorporates relaxations to certain of the standards as they apply to small care homes (ie homes with three residents or fewer).
